The Playboy of the Western World
by John Millington Synge
directed by Caitríona McLaughlin
Duration: TBC
Age rating: TBC
Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) joins Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) and Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls) in John Millington Synge’s riveting play of youth and self-discovery.
A dishevelled stranger stumbles into a rural Irish pub claiming he’s murdered his father -and becomes an instant hero. Christy Mahon charms the locals and wins the heart of fiery Pegeen Mike, transforming from nobody to legend. Until his “dead” father walks in very much alive, and the village’s hero worship shatters spectacularly.
Synge’s darkly comic 1907 masterpiece caused riots at its premiere for its scandalous portrayal of Irish life – and it remains wickedly relevant today. Dark. Irish. Deliciously funny.
