Beech Wine Society: Quarterly

The Beech Wine Society meets quarterly in the Village Hall, usually on the evening of the 3rd Friday of the 3rd month, unless it’s on another day. Themes are determined ahead of time by our expert committee and six wines are presented at each event. Help and ideas are always welcome so don’t feel shy about coming forward. Tickets are not sold in advance BUT we do need to know probable numbers ahead of time, so call to book a place on 541535 and do let us have your email address to ensure that you are kept up to speed with planned events.

Beech Embroiderers: Saturdays bi-monthly (see Diary for dates)

A new group is being formed in Beech for anyone interested in decorative stitching, patchwork etc. The group will meet bi-monthly on the third Saturday of the month starting in January. The meetings will be from 10am to 4pm and will take the form of a sewing day with members bringing their own work. There will be no formal tutors although many of the more experienced embroiderers will be only too happy to help those less experienced.

Art Classes: Mondays 2-4pm

Sally Cox runs a regular series of very relaxed classes for all abilities (even beginners) and in all media over six weeks. Bring your own materials, choose your own subject or paint along with Sally, who will be there to offer advice and will do some work in pastels herself to inspire you to have a go.

Alton Bridge Club: Mondays & Tuesdays 7.15-10.30pm

The Alton Bridge Club (www.altonbridgeclub.co.uk) will meet at Beech Village Hall every Monday & Tuesday evening (except Bank Holidays) to play duplicate bridge. We welcome visitors, especially youngsters, but before your first visit please contact any of the following who will be happy to answer any questions or try to arrange a partner if you are on your own:

 We start playing promptly at 7.30 each evening Please arrive 15/20 minutes earlier to help with setting up the tables etc. Once we have started playing it is not usually possible to include late arrivals. We aim to finish by 10.30 p.m. 

  • Monday nights are designated as ‘No Fears’ which means that less experienced players are particularly encouraged to come and play.
  • Tuesday nights are open to anyone but you will need to be familiar with rubber or duplicate bridge and to have already played for a number of years.
  • There is a £2.50 table money charge per session for visitors and £1.50 for members. Annual membership is £10 per year. We have special reduced terms for youngsters and students.
  •  The Alton Bridge Club is affiliated to the English Bridge Union.

Alton No Fear Bridge Club: Wednesdays 10.00am to 12.30pm

A friendly bridge club for students, novices and newcomers to duplicate bridge. The morning will consist of duplicate practice. The club is run by an English Bridge Union Professional Teacher and she will be at hand to give advice when necessary.

  • We play approximately 15 pre-set hands.
  • Copies of the hands are available after the session.
  • Advice and guidance on bidding and play.
  • No need to bring a partner, partner guaranteed.
  • Table Money £3.50p. Tea/Coffee & biscuits 50p.

Beginners Ballroom & Latin Dancing: Wednesdays 7.30-8.30pm
NEW BEGINNERS’ CLASS starts 8.30-9.30pm in September

Don’t be shy, come and see how much fun dancing can be! Fully qualified, experienced and patient teacher. Everyone welcome, especially those who think they have two left feet!! Make this the year you dance your way to fitness. New beginners course starts 22nd September 8.30-9.30pm; 7.30 class continues for those with some experience.

Body Moves: Tuesdays 2.00-3.00pm; Thursdays 7.15-8.15pm

Dance your way to fitness! Treat yourself to an hour away from the stresses and strains of life and enjoy this lively, friendly class that combines a variety of dance styles with general keep-fit and body conditioning.   Classes are fun and informal exercising the body and mind!  Suitable for all (12 – 80+). Dance to a variety of music from current charts hits and pop classics to light classical – anything that makes you want to move!

Why not just come along for a trial session?  You will be made most welcome.  Don’t forget to bring a drink and wear suitable clothing. Classes cost £5 per session plus a small annual fee for membership of the Keep Fit Association (although you are welcome to try a couple of classes before committing to this). Classes are also held at Alton Community Centre (Weds 10.00 – 11.00am).
